I found this recipe in Grandmother’s old recipe book in my mother’s
handwriting, therefore, I cannot verify the origin or the date it was written.
2/3 cup of shortening (Mama used Crisco) I used butter when I made this recipe.
1 lb. of light brown sugar
2 2/3 cup of flour
¾ cup of chocolate chips
1 teaspoon of baking powder
A pinch of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla
Melt butter, stir in sugar and put aside to cool for about 12 minutes.
Add eggs---one at a time---stir briskly after each egg added.
Combine flour, salt and baking powder and shift together.
Add dry mixture slowing while beating.
Add chocolate chips
Sprinkle nuts on top after cooling---just add a little chocolate frosting so
the nuts adhere to the brownie.
I sometimes add nuts to the mixture before baking.
About 1/2 cup of pecans or chopped walnuts.
Mama always gave me a cold glass of milk and a hot brownie.
Such happy memories to cherish being in the kitchen with Mama.
I like to serve them as a desert to dinner guest (or as a treat to my friends or just me)
with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
drizzled with chocolate on top.
